The Woodland Restoration Project
Since 1990, the Garden Club of London has been restoring an area of woods between Wonderland Road and the Civic Garden Complex, to a Carolinian forest.
The Woodland Garden, once a meadow unused and unappreciated for all its potential, is a restoration project of native and Carolinian plants, designed, developed and maintained by a Garden Club Committee, with general membership involvement in clean-up and planting days. Schools are also invited to participate in the clean-up as part of a mentorship programme to nurture civic responsibility and pride. Come out to experience the peace of a small woodland area. Experience the feel and scent of the rich soil in which our new plantings begin their growth cycle. Feel the satisfaction of the area you have just cleared of competition of unwanted growth.
Now there is space for the native plants, which do not need to compete with unwanted plant life and live harmoniously with each other. You will find members executing the weekly maintenance tasks on Wednesday mornings which reward the public with a rich and balanced ecosystem.
Throughout the year members plant, weed and generally care for the Woodland.
Secondary School Students assist in the spring each year with spreading mulch, planting and clean up as part of a mentorship program designed to nurture their civic pride and responsibility.
This project offers practical education for park visitors through exposure to hundreds of native plants and shrubs, which are identified and clearly labeled.
The Woodland Garden is open for visitors at all times and offers a place to sit and reflect on nature.
